BOOK REVIEW | Treasure Under Finny’s Nose

The first thing I noticed about the book was it’s size. It’s smaller than a lot of books which means the author has less time to develop the characters. The author packs a lot into this book. The heroine, Ruth, is an older woman who’s trying to deal with the fact that although her son has moved out to start a family, she’s in the "family way" again herself. The father is her second husband. She’d lost her first husband a while before. Monk is thrilled with the idea of starting a family.

Although Ruth is pregnant she signed up to help with a documentary being filmed by some college students. They are filming a documentary about the shipwreck of the Triton that sank off the coast of Finny. Ruth is reading the part of one of the survivors, a woman named Indigo Orson. At the time of the shipwreck, and the area where it occurred, being a woman, alone, wasn’t safe. Indigo realized this right away and was able to convince the men in the area that she was a man herself. The author interweaves current events with Ruth reading about Indigo. During her reading of the script, it becomes clear that there was something very valuable on the ship.

To add to the mystery, Ruth finds a body that’s washed up on the shore. This is the second time this has happened. Once again she’s determined to find out what happened!

As if Ruth’s life wasn’t complicated enough, her son returns home bringing all of his problems with him.

The author does an amazing job of weaving a complicated tale in a short amount of time. It was a fun read, and I recommend it.
