INTERVIEW | Tammy Barley

TammyBarleyPhoto for Terry Burns Tammy, describe yourself for our visitors.

When I’m not writing, I ghostwrite and edit books for others (biographies, self-help, business books), I mentor other writers, and I’m a homeschool mom of three tweens. I currently have little time for hobbies, but I’m hopelessly addicted to fiction, I love to bake, craft, and garden. Music—wide variety; I’m especially fond of good movie soundtracks. I have one ministry I enjoy and support—La Esperanza Misión de Niños, The Hope Children’s Mission in beautiful Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico.

How do you find time to connect with God?

As a family, we read the Bible together every night, and do Bible study during home school hours. Also, I talk to God whenever I need advice or want to tell Him something. No long distance charges, never ending rollover minutes. =)

Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?

Nora Roberts—many, though I skip over the excessive language

Jayne Ann Krentz—Light in Shadow

Judith McNaught—Night Whispers

Dean Koontz—Lightning, The Key to Midnight, House of Thunder

Michael Crichton—Sphere

Yep, I enjoy suspense, and I weave suspense into my historical romances. =)

Tell us about your journey to publication.

I took every writing class my college offered, and took theatre and acting classes to learn how to get into and develop character. My first sale was a play, then devotionals followed, then Love’s Rescue.

Here’s a quick blurb:

A Dividing Conflict

In 1863, the War Between the States is dividing more than a nation. To escape the conflict, Jessica Hale and her family flee their Kentucky home and head for Nevada Territory. Her brother, Ambrose, committed to the Confederates, rejoins the Kentucky militia and is disowned by his father. But the worst is yet to come.

A Heroic Kidnapper

When Unionists presume the family to be Confederate sympathizers, they set a devastating fire to their home. All alone and then “kidnapped” by cattleman Jake Bennett, Jessica is taken to a ranch deep in the Sierra Nevada wilderness. Can she overcome her resentment toward Jake for failing to save her family?

The Depths of Love

When Jake launches a plan to help Jessica’s brother escape from prison camp, she sees him for the honest, good-hearted Christian man that he is and now knows the depth of his love for her. Through the lingering smoke and smoldering ashes from her ruined home and murdered family, will Jessica see a future with Jake?

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

I grew up traveling (I’ve lived in 27 cities and towns in 9 states (so far)), so I’ve seen much of the United States and toured many historical sites. I was compelled by touring Virginia City, Nevada, and especially when I watched an unforgettable one-man-play at Piper’s Opera House, called Ghosts of the Opera House. The story took off from there.

List your three most recent books.

I’ve ghostwritten a number of books for others; Love’s Rescue is the first book with my name on the cover as author.

Love’s Rescue won the Golden Rose Award, 2nd place, inspirational category, and is currently #12 on ChristianBook’s historical fiction bestselling list. Pretty exciting.

What’s next for you?

Book two in The Sierra Chronicles, Hope’s Promise, is underway. In it Jake and Jessica Bennett learn there was more to her parents’ deaths than they knew, and both the ranch and Jessica are in danger. Now they must quickly find the murderer . . . and discover for themselves how far they will go for love.

Hope’s Promise should be available next spring/summer. =)
